Mrs. Ruth S. Phillips

With deep love and heavenly gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mrs. Ruth S. Phillips, who entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Ruth was born on May 24, 1931, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Lewis Sally Sr. and Ruby Tucker Sally. She was the seventh of eleven children and the second-born daughter in a family rooted in love, faith, and resilience. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Edward Sally Sr., Herbert Sally Sr., Willie Sally, Leroy Sally, Lewis Sally, and George Sally; and her sisters, Virginia B. Sally and Margaret S. Sally.

At an early age, Ruth accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. Her faith remained the foundation of her life and guided her every step. She attended Richmond City Public Schools and graduated from Armstrong High School.

After high school, Ruth relocated to New York City to live with her sister, Virginia, before eventually moving to Washington, D.C. It was there that her determination and passion for helping others led her to pursue a career as a cardiovascular technician. Ruth became one of the first women of color to hold that position at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Her excellence, professionalism, and strong work ethic enabled her to work alongside some of the nation's leading cardiologists and earned her the distinguished honor of assisting with the annual physical care of the late President Gerald Ford and First Lady Betty Ford.

On January 11, 1969, Ruth married the love of her life, Eddie Phillips, at First Baptist Church in Westbury, Long Island, New York, with Reverend Hines officiating. Together they shared a loving marriage and a life filled with treasured memories. Ruth stood faithfully beside her husband throughout his decorated military career, supporting him through every assignment, move, and transition. Because of his service, they lived in several states, including California, Idaho, and Florida, before eventually making Greenville, South Carolina, their home.

Ruth was bold, fearless, and full of life. She carried herself with elegance, grace, and confidence. She loved fashion and was always beautifully dressed, often complemented by one of her signature hats and a matching purse. Ruth had a strong presence that could not be ignored, and she left a lasting impression wherever she went. She was an avid reader who found great joy in books and learning. She often shared that love by sending books to family members, especially her sister Margaret. She especially had the pleasure of naming her niece, Meadowlark, after the bird. Her love of reading inspired those around her and left a lasting impression on younger generations.

Ruth was a faithful and devoted member of Poplar Spring Baptist Church, where she served in the Senior Missionary Ministry and supported the work of the church with a willing heart. She was also an active member of the Reedy River Baptist Association Missionary Auxiliary. Whether serving in the kitchen, attending church events, helping with ministry efforts, or simply stepping in wherever she was needed, Ruth gave of herself wholeheartedly and joyfully.

Mrs. Ruth S. Phillips will be remembered for her strength, her bold spirit, her unwavering faith, and the love she shared with all who knew her. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, church family, and community.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her devoted husband of 57 years, Eddie Phillips, Chief Master Sergeant US Air Force, Retired; her brother, Benjamin Sally of Kissimmee, Florida; her sister, Joyce Sally Scott of Richmond, Virginia; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Simpsonville, SC.

Burial will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, 1 Memorial Avenue, Arlington, VA 22211.
