Deacon Henry Milam

96 years

Deacon Henry Milam was born on November 1, 1929, in Laurens, South Carolina to the late Dunk Milam, Sr. and Emma Irby Milam.  He was raised in Simpsonville, South Carolina where he developed the strong work ethic, unwavering faith and humble spirit that would define his remarkable life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of seventy-four years, Deaconess Minnie L. Milam and his cherished daughter, Joyce Milam Hawkins.

Growing up during the era of segregation in the South, Henry received his early education at Flint Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse located on the campus of Poplar Spring Missionary Baptist Church. He later attended Simpsonville High School for Colored Children, graduating with the Class of 1950.

In 1955, Henry began his career with The Addison Corporation in Greenville, South Carolina, where he faithfully worked until his retirement in 1991. Beyond his profession, he became widely known throughout the community as a dedicated farmer and gifted gardener.  His generous spirit was evident in the countless vegetables, fruits, and meats he shared with family, neighbors, church members and friends year after year.  Giving was simply a part of who he was.

He was also a proud member of Hopewell Masonic Lodge #263 of Simpsonville, South Carolina.

Deacon Milam was a devoted and faithful member of Poplar Spring Missionary Baptist Church, where he served from his teenage years well into adulthood before lovingly dedicated himself to the care of his wife and later facing his own declining health.  His years of service reflected his deep commitment to God and His church.  He faithfully served as a member of the Deacon Ministry, Sunday School Superintendent, Men's Sunday School Class Teacher, All-Male Chorus Member, Willing Workers Member, Church Cemetery Sexton, Church Janitor and affectionately the self appointed Supervisor of Church Construction Projects.  Whatever needed to be done, Deacon Milam was willing to lend his hands, his wisdom and his heart.

He leaves to cherish his memory three devoted sons: Calvin (Angela) Milam, Matthew (Patricia) Milam, and Brian Patrick (Crystal) Milam. He also leaves a loving legacy through his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, countless friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Deacon Henry Milam was a man of remarkable wisdom. practical knowledge and uncommon experience.  Whether offering advice, teaching a life lesson, solving a problem or simply sharing a story, his insight was respected by all who knew him.

Above all, he will be remembered as a a faithful servant of God, a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a hardworking provider, and a man whose life was marked by commitment, generosity, integrity and steadfast faith.

The family will receive friends at 117 Milam Rd., Simpsonville, SC.
