Mrs. Ernestine Garret was born August 29, 1938 to John Walter McKinnon and Sally (Sarah) McKinnon, in Petersburg, Virginia. She passed on September 1, 2020. Tina, as she was affectionately known attended Maggie L. Walker High School. She later moved to New York where she studied Key Punch and was part of the early introduction of the computer industry in the workplace. Upon her early arrival to New York she worked at various jobs positions. One of her most memorable places of employment was at Jackie Robinson's Chuck Full of Nuts on Harlem on 125th St. She was there in the 60's, at a time to see many events similar to what is happening now: The Civil Rights Movement, Malcolm X speeches nearby, and the advance of Black music, art and culture. Some of my fondest memories are of going to the Apollo theatre with her and my brother (for free, Tina had it like that!) to see many of the top talent of the the time. As we all remember Tina loved cooking, had great style which was reflected in both her personal attire and the design of her home. Her home was designed for comfort and style to accommodate any friend or family member who visited or just popped in. Born in Virginia, made a career in New York but Hickory Tavern was her home. Tom built it and Tina made it their home. Many, many days of good food, fun and loud laughter can be remembered. The many friends, co workers & church members of Bethel Hall Missionary Church became her South Carolina family. Her close friends and fellow worshipers sustained her throughout her life here and provided comfort and support during her last days, too many to mention and we didn't want to leave anyone out.... you all know who you are. Tina leaves to cherish her memory: Children: Jacqueline McKinnon, Garry Straus, Grandchildren: Nya (Cris) Creary, Navia Creary, Imani McKinnon (Big Mani), Imani Garrett, God-Daughter Veena Smith and Great-Granddaughter Amilah, Beloved Friends and Church Family. Gravesite services will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 11am at the Bethel Hall Baptist Church with Reverend Thomas DENDY officiating. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 2-5 at Beasley Funeral home in Laurens. The family is at their respected homes.
